    VAG 1.8 / 2.0 TSI - Tuning Guide

    VAG 1.8 / 2.0 TSI - Tuning Guide

Stages and related requirements and recommendations. Note:
    ● Not all tuners use the same definition on the different tuning stages.
    ● The specified services may vary from car to car, dynamometer to dynamometer and of which parts are used and - in particular - of the ECU tuning.
    ● It is recommended to respect the minimum requirements for the various stages, otherwise the risk of damage to the engine is significantly increased.

    Stage 0, 210 hp / 335 Nm, 98+ Oct (Declared to 192 Hp / 320 Nm)

    ● Standard car

    Stage 1, 244 HP / 375 Nm, 98+ Oct Min. Requirements:

    ● ECU tuning

    Recommended:
    ● Intercooler

    Stage 2, 265 hp / 430 NM, 98+ Oct. Mine. requirements:

    ● All min. requirements from Stage 1
    ● Downpipe with sports catalyst
    ● Intercooler

    Recommended:

    ● Cat-back exhaust (May be required to achieve the specified performance)
    ● Sport clutch (May be required as standard clutch only can handle up to 400 Nm).
    ● Sports air filter electric / and intake (May be necessary to achieve the specified performance).
    ● Diverter valve (May be necessary as the standard valve can not always keep the turbo pressure)

    Stage 3 IS20: 315 HP / 445 Nm, 98+ Oct / IS38: 350 HP / 460 Nm, 98 Oct Min. requirements:
    ● All min. requirements from Stage 1 + 2
    ● IS20 or IS38 Turbo (+ new gaskets)
    ● Colder spark plugs.
    ● Ignition coils, eg from Golf GTI / Golf R

    Recommended:

    ● Cat-back exhaust (May be required to achieve specified performance.)
    ● Sport clutch (May be required as standard clutch only can handle up to 400 Nm).
    ● Sport air filter electric / and intake (May be necessary to achieve the specified performance)
    ● Diverter valve (May be necessary as the standard valve can not always keep the turbo pressure)

    Comments:
    ● IS20: The cables to the wastegate must be extended approx. 10 cm, as the wastegate on the IS20 is located differently.

Upgrade parts. Below are examples of parts that should suit racers or tuners that offer ECU tuning.

    IMPORTANT:
    ● Double-check that the parts are correct before purchasing. There may be errors in this list, links may change and suppliers may also change their products.
    ● The list below should NOT be read as a recommendation of the listed parts or companies. It's just a list of possible choices.

ECU Tuning: Modifying the engine control software to utilize/adapt the parts that have been modified on the engine. The ECU can contain up to 2 million program lines and thousands of charts that determine how the engine (and the car as a whole) should be controlled in different situations. This is the most important single part and also most difficult regarding the tuning of the car. A non-professional and skilled tuner can, at best, change the software so that the car does not run optimally. In the worst case scenario, the tuner can damage the engine and probably other parts of the car as well.

Overall, two different types of tuning are performed:

    Custom :
    ● The tuning is adapted to the specific car and the parts fitted.
    ● The tuning is often done locally, while the car is being tested on a dynamometer.
    ● The tuning is usually based on basic software, which is adjusted concurrently with the tuning. The companies that develop the basic software often develop software for many car brands and car models.
    ● The quality of the tuning depends on the competencies of the local tuner performing the tuning and the quality of the basic software.
    ● Those who choose this type of tuning often do so for two reasons: ○ Believe that the Custom tuning makes better use of the specific car and the fitted parts, and ultimately gives a better result. “Not custom” tuning has not been developed for the tuning they want, e.g. a special turbocharger.

    Not custom:

    ● The tuning is fully developed - often by large tuning companies - for the specific car model and engine. Companies often specialize in tuning one or a few car brands. For example VAG (VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT).
    ● The file is designed for each Stage and the minimum requirements the company specifies for the given stage.
    ● Some of these tuning companies write that the ECU in the car itself can take into account, and take advantage of, minor changes such as fitting upgraded Catback exhaust and intake.
    ● The quality of the tuning is usually at a high level, as companies often spend a lot of development resources on developing the tuning for the specific car model and engine.
    ● Those who choose this type of tuning often do so for two reasons: ○ Confidence that it is a large company that has completed the tuning. ○ Believe that the tuning ultimately gives the best result.

    Intercooler:
    Intercooler

    Turbo diverter valve :
    Blow off valve

    Turbo:
    ● IHI IS20: Turbo

    Note:
    ● The warranty on the car may become invalid completely/partially as soon as the car is tuned.
    ● Changing the car may make it unable to pass inspections.
    ● It may be illegal to tune the car.
    ● When tuning, the car is pressed beyond what the manufacturer has stated that the car can handle. The more the car is pressured, the greater the chance that it will break.
    ● And you can certainly be afflicted by many other casualties than those listed.
