    Sunoco - The Little Oil Company from 1886.

    Sunoco restarted more than 130 years ago in Pennsylvania. Here's some information about the manufacturer at their big remarkable year.

    • 1886: Joseph Newton Pew & amp; Edward O. Emerson was a partner in the Peoples Natural Gas Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, when they decided to expand from gas to oil.
    • 1890: They became official as a company unto themselves under the name "The Sun Oil Company".
    • 1916: The company had grown and they expanded to build ships - including 2 subsidiaries called Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company.
    • 1920s: The Sun Oil Company opened its first service station in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and not long after, one arrived in Toledo, Ohio. In 1925, the Sun Oil Company went public for the first time, and their shares were listed on the New York Stock Exchange for the first time.
    • 1937: One of the most dramatic events for the company and the refining industry, as Sun put into operation the world's first large commercial catalytic cracking plant in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania. The Marcus Hook plant is still owned and operated today, serving as a refining facility for the company's development of race fuels.
    • 1941: Sun who always strived to provide better products entered the mining industry as the Cordero Mining Company of Nevada. The reason for this was so they could supplement mercury to Sunoco Motor Oils. The metal proved vital to the United States in World War II.
    • 1950: Sun began to push its boundaries to be outside the states. There was one refinery in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, and one in Venezuela. The Venezuelan government nationalized Sun's oil reserves in 1975, leaving them out of the market.
    • 1960s: In 1960, Sun Oil entered motorsport and paired up with Roger Penske Racing Team. This partnership was hugely successful - including the Indianapolis 500 in 1972.
    • 1970s: In 1975, the company chose to be organized into 14 operating units, 2 real estate companies, and a non-operating parent company. This gave them new headquarters in Radnor, Pennsylvania. Sun Oil changed its name in 1976 to Sun Company Inc.
    • 1980s: With a history of innovation and a love of performance, Sun developed and released the highest octane unleaded gasoline, the Sunoco ULTRA 94, in 1983. In 2005, Sunoco chose to stop the development of ULTRA 94 after 22 solid years. In the late 19's, Sun Company Inc. started. to rename their stations Sunoco to match the name of their fuel.
    • 1998: In November 1998, Sun Company Inc. to change its name to Sunoco Inc.
    • 2004: In 2004, Sunoco chose to sign a contract to be the official fuel supplier for NASCAR - recently this has also become IndyCar and NHRA. Overall, Sunoco is the official fuel supplier for more than 50 different races.
