Surge tanks
If the fuel sloshes
A surge tank is an important solution in the fuel system when the car is used for motorsport, drifting, trackdays or other forms of hard driving where the fuel can slosh around in the tank. During fast cornering, hard braking or heavy acceleration, the fuel can move so much inside the original tank that the pump is temporarily unable to pick up fuel. This can lead to an unstable fuel supply, poor engine running and, in the worst case, engine damage if it is starved of fuel under load.
A surge tank works as an extra intermediary in the fuel system and helps ensure that the engine always receives a stable supply of fuel. The original pump or a smaller lift pump sends fuel to the surge tank, and from there one or more fuel pumps can supply the engine more consistently. This makes surge tanks especially relevant in high-powered cars, motorsport cars, cars on semi-slicks, slicks or other setups where the car is exposed to greater G-forces than during normal road use.
At Qualitec, you will find surge tanks for customers who want a more reliable solution for their fuel system. A surge tank is often used together with upgraded fuel systems, larger fuel pumps, E85 setups, bigger turbos, higher power outputs or custom-built fuel systems where the original tank and pickup are no longer enough. In many cases, a surge tank is a cheaper and simpler solution than rebuilding the entire tank, while at the same time giving far better control over fuel supply under hard load.
Here you will find surge tanks in different sizes and designs for many types of projects. Some models are made for one or more external fuel pumps, while other solutions suit more custom-built setups. That makes them relevant for both street cars with performance upgrades, race cars, drift cars, time attack cars and more uncompromising motorsport projects.
When choosing a surge tank, it is important to consider how much power the car needs to support, how many pumps you want to use, which type of fuel you run and how the rest of the fuel system is built. A correctly matched solution with surge tank, fuel pumps, fittings, hoses and regulator can be crucial for the car to deliver stable fuel pressure and enough flow when it really matters.
