Intercoms
Intercoms and communication systems are used in motorsport, rally and other competition builds where clear communication between driver and co-driver is needed during driving. In noisy cars with engine noise, transmission noise, road noise, vibrations and helmets on, it is not enough to simply talk normally. Here, a well-functioning intercom system is an important part of the equipment because it makes it possible to hear notes, messages and commands clearly, even when the load and noise level are high.
An intercom system can make a big difference to both safety and function during driving. When communication works correctly, it becomes easier to work as a team in the car, and it reduces the risk of misunderstandings in situations where timing and clear communication are important. In many solutions, sound quality, noise reduction and correct compatibility with helmet equipment are therefore at least as important as the installation itself.
Intercoms and communication systems are available in different types, depending on needs and setup. Some solutions are simple and compact, while others have more features such as individual volume control for driver and co-driver, automatic activation when the helmet is connected, or the option to connect to a camera so communication can be recorded together with video. This makes them relevant both for pure use during competition and for analysis, documentation and onboard recordings afterwards.
Compatibility is an important part when choosing an intercom. In motorsport, different connector types, helmet systems and headset solutions are used, so it is important to choose a solution that matches the equipment already used in the car. Some intercoms fit directly with specific helmet brands and communication systems, while others can be used with adapters. That makes it important to look at connector type, helmet compatibility and the overall installation before choosing.
Mounting and placement also play a major role. Some intercoms are made for fixed mounting on the roll cage or in the cabin, so they are easy to operate and well protected during use. In a motorsport car, it is important that the solution is both practical to use and fits into the rest of the car’s setup without getting in the way or being exposed to unnecessary strain. That is why intercoms are often chosen based on size, operation, power supply and how they fit with the rest of the car’s equipment.
