Brake fluid reservoirs

Brake fluid reservoirs are an important part of the car’s braking system and are used to store and supply brake fluid to the system. Even though it is a relatively simple component, it has a major impact on reliability, serviceability, and the overall function of the braking system. On many cars, the brake fluid reservoir is an integrated part of the original setup, but for modifications, motorsport, pedal box solutions, and custom builds, there is often a need for separate or universal reservoirs that fit the new setup.

For projects where heat is a critical factor, an aluminium brake fluid reservoir is often the right choice. The aluminium versions are designed to withstand very high temperatures and are particularly well suited to hard motorsport use, where heat from the engine bay, brakes, and general load places greater demands on the components. Reservoirs made from other materials are still compatible with brake fluid and suitable for many builds, but they are not intended for the same extreme temperature load as aluminium. That is why the choice of material should always be assessed based on the car’s intended use and the overall setup.

It is also important to choose the correct hose for brake fluid. For brake fluid, you must use a PTFE brake hose or an EPDM brake hose. Ordinary rubber or fuel hoses are not chemically compatible with brake fluid and can lead to leaks, degradation, and in the worst case brake failure, especially in motorsport and other demanding builds. Hose choice is therefore not a minor detail, but an important part of a safe and durable installation.

On road cars, a brake fluid reservoir can also be relevant as a replacement for a worn, cracked, or discoloured original reservoir. On track cars and custom builds, the requirements are often higher, both in terms of space usage, service access, and compatibility with specialist parts. Here, it is important to choose a reservoir that can withstand the use and at the same time fits the setup around the master cylinder, brackets, and hoses. It is especially important to consider capacity, connection type, number of outlets, material, mounting options, and compatibility with the rest of the braking system.
