K&N filter maintenance
K&N air filters are designed to be cleaned and reused, which is exactly why proper maintenance is an important part of keeping the filter working as it should. In this category, you will find K&N filter cleaner and K&N filter oil, both as complete service kits and as separate products, so you can choose the solution that best suits your needs.
K&N air filters are made from oiled cotton, which is designed to work together with the special filter oil. When the filter is cleaned, not only dirt and impurities are removed, but also the oil that helps the filter capture fine particles. This is why the filter must always be re-oiled after cleaning. Without the correct oil, the filter can lose part of its filtration ability, and with too much oil, you risk an unnecessarily greasy surface. The right balance is therefore important for both filtration and airflow.
How to clean a K&N filter:
First, remove the filter and carefully remove any loose dirt. Then apply K&N filter cleaner evenly to the filter media and let it work for around 10 minutes. Do not allow the cleaner to dry on the filter. Afterwards, rinse the filter thoroughly with clean water until the dirt and residue are gone. Once the filter is clean, let it air dry completely before applying new oil. It is important that the filter is fully dry so the oil can distribute correctly.
How to oil a K&N filter correctly:
Once the filter is completely dry, apply K&N filter oil evenly along the pleats of the filter. The oil should be allowed time to soak into the material, after which you can check for any light areas that need a little extra. The goal is an even distribution across the entire filter surface. The filter should not be soaked through. Too much oil does not improve filtration and can instead make maintenance unnecessarily messy and less precise.
Regular maintenance helps ensure that your K&N air filter continues to perform correctly. A clean and properly oiled filter helps maintain the function the filter was designed for and gives you a solution that can be used again and again as part of the ongoing service of the car.
Frequently asked questions about K&N filter cleaner & oil (click here to open)
How often should I clean my K&N air filter?
It depends on the environment and driving conditions. If you mainly drive on asphalt in normal Danish weather, it is usually enough to clean it when the filter has clearly become dark and filled with dirt. If you drive a lot on gravel roads, in construction zones, during dry periods, or in motorsport, you should expect to service it more often. Clean it when needed, not by the calendar.
Can I clean my K&N filter without oiling it afterwards?
No. When you clean it, you remove the oil, and without proper re-oiling the filter loses a large part of its ability to capture fine particles. A clean but non-oiled filter works poorly in practice.
How long should the filter cleaner work?
Around 10 minutes is normal. The most important thing is that the cleaner must not dry on the filter.
How do I rinse it correctly – and why does the direction matter?
Rinse with clean water at low pressure, preferably from the clean side toward the dirty side. This way you flush the dirt out instead of pushing it further into the filter.
Can I use a pressure washer or compressed air?
No. High pressure and compressed air can damage the filter media and ruin the pleats. Use cleaner and normal low water pressure only.
Can I use petrol, brake cleaner or other harsh chemicals?
No. Harsh chemicals can damage the filter material and the adhesive bonds. Only use filter cleaner intended for this purpose.
Why does the filter need to air dry?
The filter must be 100% dry before oiling, otherwise the oil will not distribute correctly. Avoid heat from an oven or heat gun – let it air dry naturally.
How do I know if I have used too much oil?
If the filter looks wet or the oil is pooling, there is too much. Correct oiling is about an even colour, not a soaked filter.
How do I know if I have used too little oil?
If there are light areas after the oil has soaked in, there is too little. Only add more oil to those areas.
How long should the oil soak in?
Wait around 20 minutes, check for light areas, and adjust before reinstalling the filter.
Should I choose oil in a spray or bottle?
Spray is easiest for most people. A bottle gives more control. Both work if applied evenly.
What is the difference between a service kit/recharger kit and buying cleaner/oil separately?
A kit is the easy solution with both products in one package. Buying separately makes sense if you service multiple filters or want to restock between services.
My filter is still discoloured after cleaning – is that a problem?
Not necessarily. As long as the filter is free from loose dirt and the water runs clear when rinsing, it is working as it should.
Does a K&N filter last forever?
No. If the filter is physically damaged, or the rubber edge no longer seals properly, it should be replaced.
