Oil temperature gauges
Oil temperature gauges are used to monitor the temperature of the engine oil and are an important part of many performance cars, motorsport cars and custom builds where better insight into engine load and the working conditions of the lubrication system is wanted. When the oil temperature can be read correctly, it becomes easier to assess whether the engine is operating within a sensible temperature range, and whether the oil, cooling and load match each other in the specific setup.
In many projects, oil temperature is an important value to monitor because engine oil not only lubricates, but also helps carry heat away from the engine’s internal parts. If the oil temperature becomes too high, it can affect the properties of the oil and therefore the engine’s protection under load. That is why oil temperature gauges are especially relevant on cars with tuning, turbo setups, track driving, motorsport or other use where the engine works harder than standard.
An oil temperature gauge is often used as a supplement to other gauges, for example oil pressure, water temperature and boost pressure, so the driver gets a better overall overview of the engine’s condition. This can be a major advantage during normal monitoring, under hard load and during troubleshooting if you want to understand how the car reacts under different conditions. On some cars, it is especially important to see when the oil has reached the correct operating temperature, while other setups require more focus on monitoring how hot the system becomes during longer periods of load.
