Mounts

Mounts for the engine and gearbox are an important part of the car’s drivetrain, as they keep the engine and gearbox correctly positioned in the chassis. Engine mounts and gearbox mounts must be able to carry the weight of the components while also damping vibrations, movement and loads from the engine, transmission and road.

Worn or too soft mounts can cause unnecessary movement in the drivetrain, which may be felt as knocking noises, vibrations, imprecise gear changes or excessive engine movement during acceleration and braking. In performance and motorsport cars, stronger mounts can be a relevant upgrade, especially with increased engine power, hard driving or the use of a more direct gearshift.

Engine mounts and gearbox mounts are available in different types and hardnesses depending on car model and use. Standard mounts typically provide the most comfort and lowest vibration level, while reinforced mounts, polyurethane bushings or stiffer solutions can give better drivetrain control and more precise power transfer. For motorsport, harder mounts are often chosen, but they can also result in more vibration and more noise in the cabin.
