Short shifters
Short shifters are used to make gear changes shorter, more direct and more precise. They are installed as part of the gear shift mechanism and change the ratio in the shifting movement, so the gear lever needs to move less between each gear. The result is a more positive gear change and a more mechanical shift feel, which many prefer for road cars, performance cars and motorsport projects alike.
A short shift is especially popular on cars where a more sporting driving experience and faster gear changes are desired. By reducing the travel of the gear lever, it can become easier to shift quickly and precisely, especially during active driving, track driving or trackday use. At the same time, it provides a more direct connection with the gearbox, which often improves the feeling behind the wheel significantly compared with a standard gear shift mechanism.
Among other things, we have had our own short shifter for BMW produced, which is a very good solution for those who want more precision in the shift. On this type, it is possible to lock the gear shift so you cannot accidentally shift into reverse or fifth gear during a mis-shift. It only requires an adjustment in the gear shift so it can be adapted to the desired function.
It is important to be aware that a short shift often provides a firmer and more mechanical gear change than the original setup. For many, that is exactly part of the advantage, but it also means that comfort can in some cases feel a little less soft than with a standard setup. In return, you typically get a more precise and engaging driving experience, where the gear change feels quicker and more controlled.
When you receive a short shift, it is a good idea to check that all bolts and nuts are tightened correctly. It can also be sensible to use thread locker on the bolts, as short shifters are often exposed to vibrations during driving, which over time can cause the connections to work loose.
