Fuel tanks
Fuel tanks are a central part of any fuel system and are of great importance for reliability, range and safety. Whether it is an ordinary street car, a modified performance car or a dedicated motorsport project, the tank must be able to store the fuel safely and deliver a stable supply to the rest of the system. A fuel tank is therefore not just a container, but an important part of the overall setup.
When modifying a car’s fuel system, many choose a different tank solution than the original one. This can be relevant if the car is being built for track use, drifting, rally, drag racing, off-road or other projects where greater demands are placed on space, weight distribution, safety or fuel supply. In custom builds and motorsport, compact or universal fuel tanks are often used, providing greater flexibility in terms of placement, fittings, outlets and return.
A good fuel tank must suit the fuel type and the load the car will be running with. This applies to petrol, ethanol, E85 and other fuel types, where material choice and compatibility play a major role. At the same time, it is important to consider connections for the fuel pump, return, venting and any sensors or level senders, so the tank works correctly with the rest of the fuel system.
For motorsport and more demanding projects, it is especially important to focus on safety and stable fuel supply. During hard acceleration, braking and cornering, the fuel can move around inside the tank, which is why many choose solutions where the tank, collection and venting are incorporated into a more complete setup. This is often where you see special tanks, fuel cells or other solutions designed to perform better under load than a standard tank.
