Solid lifters

Mechanical lifters are an important part of the engine’s valvetrain and are used in engine builds where more direct and precise control of valve movement is desired. In the performance and motorsport world, they are also often referred to as solid lifters, and they are particularly associated with more aggressive cam profiles and applications where the focus is on higher RPM and more demanding valve control.

Mechanical and hydraulic lifters have the same function, but they work differently. Unlike hydraulic lifters, mechanical lifters do not adjust themselves using oil pressure. They are therefore typically used in setups where the focus is on precision, stability at high RPM, and a valvetrain built for performance rather than comfort. This makes mechanical lifters relevant in everything from tuned street cars to track cars, drag racing, and other motorsport projects where the rest of the engine is also built for harder use.

Mechanical lifters typically require more ongoing inspection than hydraulic lifters because they do not adjust valve lash automatically with oil pressure. This means the valve lash must be set correctly and should be checked regularly, especially on engines that are used hard or run more aggressive cam profiles. If the valve lash changes over time, it can affect engine operation, wear, and the precision of the valvetrain.
