A surge tank is an important solution in the fuel system when the car is used for motorsport, drifting, trackdays or other forms of hard driving where the fuel can slosh around in the tank. During fast cornering, hard braking or heavy acceleration, the fuel can move so much inside the original tank that the pump is temporarily unable to pick up fuel. This can lead to an unstable fuel supply, poor engine running and, in the worst case, engine damage if it is starved of fuel under load.

A surge tank works as an extra intermediary in the fuel system and helps ensure that the engine always receives a stable supply of fuel. The original pump or a smaller lift pump sends fuel to the surge tank, and from there one or more fuel pumps can supply the engine more consistently.
