Spark plug covers
Spark plug covers are protective sleeves or covers that are fitted over spark plugs, spark plug boots or ignition wires. They are typically made from heat-resistant materials and are used to reduce heat exposure from surrounding components. The purpose is to protect the ignition system from radiant heat and thereby ensure stable operation, especially under load.
In many builds, spark plug covers are used as part of an overall heat management solution. They are often used together with heat shield cover wraps, turbo blankets, exhaust wrap and other thermal protection products, where the aim is to keep temperatures down around critical components.
Spark plug covers are primarily used around spark plugs and ignition wires where they sit close to hot components. This is especially relevant on turbocharged engines, where the turbine housing, manifold and downpipe can generate a lot of heat close to the ignition system. They are also used on V-engines and other builds where space is limited and where spark plugs and wires are positioned close to exhaust components.
In motorsport and performance builds, where the engine is exposed to high loads and temperatures, spark plug covers are often an important part of protecting the ignition system from heat and ensuring a stable spark under all conditions.
One of the biggest advantages of spark plug covers is that they provide targeted heat protection directly around spark plugs and wires. This can help reduce the risk of heat exposure, which could otherwise lead to failure, poor ignition or breakdowns in the ignition system.
They can also help protect against dirt, oil and other contamination in the engine bay, which over time can affect component life. In practice, they are often used as an extra safeguard in areas where temperature and load are higher than normal.
