Camshafts
Camshafts are a central part of the engine’s valvetrain and have a direct influence on how the engine performs and behaves throughout the entire rev range. A camshaft controls when the intake and exhaust valves open and close, and thereby how efficiently the engine can be filled with air and fuel while also expelling exhaust gases. This makes the camshaft one of the most important components in both standard engines and performance engine builds.
In many engine projects, different or upgraded camshafts are chosen to change the engine’s character. Depending on the profile and design, a camshaft can provide more low-end torque, better mid-range or higher power at high RPM. This makes camshafts relevant for everything from tuned street cars to track cars, drag racing and other motorsport projects where the engine’s performance is being developed with a clear purpose.
When choosing camshafts, it is important to consider the engine platform, intended use and ambition level of the project. A poorly chosen camshaft can result in rough idle or an impractical power band, while the right solution can significantly improve both drivability and performance.
