Clutch discs
Clutch discs are a central part of the clutch and have a major impact on how the car’s power is transferred from the engine to the gearbox. This is where the connection between the engine and drivetrain takes place, and therefore the choice of clutch disc has a big influence on grip, durability, and driving characteristics. In standard driving, the focus is often on comfort and smooth engagement, while tuning, motorsport, and higher torque place much greater demands on the clutch disc’s material and construction.
Clutch discs are available in several types depending on the car’s use and power level. Organic clutch discs are often well suited for road cars where good comfort and softer engagement are desired, while sintered or paddle clutch discs are typically used in more uncompromising setups with high loads, fast gear changes, and focus on maximum power transfer. The choice depends, among other things, on engine output, torque, driving style, and whether the car is used on the road, track, or for a custom build.
At Qualitec, you will find clutch discs for both standard replacement, performance upgrades, and motorsport. Whether you are looking for a clutch disc for a road car with light tuning or a more aggressive solution for a race car and custom build, the correct match with the pressure plate, flywheel, and the rest of the clutch setup is crucial to achieve a setup that works properly.

What is a clutch disc, and why is it important in motorsport?
A clutch disc is the part of the clutch that transfers engine power to the gearbox. In motorsport and tuned cars, a performance clutch disc is essential for handling the increased torque and high loads – especially during fast gear changes and hard acceleration. Standard discs simply cannot keep up.
Which type of clutch disc should I choose – sintered or organic?
That depends on your setup and use:
- Sintered clutch disc: Extremely wear-resistant, bites hard, handles high torque – perfect for racing, trackdays, and heavily tuned cars. For example our 240MM SINTERED CLUTCH DISC for BMW M50/M52/M54 or VAG platforms.
- Organic clutch disc: Better comfort and softer engagement – ideal for road cars with moderate upgrades. For example our 228MM and 240MM Special ORGANIC Clutch DISC. Organic discs rarely handle more than 300–400 Nm, while sintered discs typically handle 500+ Nm depending on the setup.
Do your clutch discs fit BMW and VAG?
Yes, we have a wide range for both BMW (especially M50, M52, M54 engines) and VAG (VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda). For example, you will find:
- 240MM and 228MM sintered and organic clutch discs.
- Fits racing clutches and flywheels from Performance Clutch and Sachs Performance.
- BMW’s 23x29-10N typically fits Getrag gearboxes from the E36/E46 series.
Always check the specifications (dimensions and number of splines) or contact us if you are unsure.
Can I use one of your clutch discs in a road car?
Yes – many people use our organic clutch discs in tuned road cars. However, sintered discs can be a bit aggressive for daily driving (for example harsh engagement and vibrations in traffic), but they are the most effective solution for serious performance.
Can I install the clutch disc myself?
If you have experience with transmissions and clutches, you can definitely install it yourself. Otherwise, we recommend that a mechanic or motorsport workshop handles the installation. You will typically need to:
- Remove the gearbox.
- Use a centering tool to ensure correct disc placement.
- Check that the clutch and flywheel are compatible.
What are the advantages of a performance clutch disc?
- Handles higher torque and power.
- Faster engagement and “bite”.
- Less sensitive to heat.
- Better durability under hard use.
- Compatible with lightweight flywheels and racing setups.
- Typically higher friction and often with a rigid hub for faster response – although with more noise and vibration.
Which type of clutch disc lasts the longest?
That depends on driving style, load, and clutch type:
- Sintered clutch discs are specifically designed for motorsport and track driving, where they are exposed to repeated hard gear changes, very high temperatures, and the need for a firm bite without slipping.
- Organic clutch discs will begin to “glaze”, melt resin, or lose friction under very hard use. Under less demanding use, organic discs last longer than sintered discs.
What should I pay attention to before buying?
- Clutch diameter (for example 228MM or 240MM).
- Number of splines and spline dimensions (for example 23x29-10N).
- Single- or twin-disc clutch.
- Match with your flywheel and clutch hub.
Contact us if you are unsure about compatibility.
What do designations such as “23x29-10N” mean?
It refers to:
- Number of splines: In this case 23.
- Spline diameter: 23x29 mm means the gearbox input shaft is 29 mm outer diameter and 23 mm inner diameter at the “teeth”.
- Hub type – the profile that matches the gearbox input shaft.
This is important to ensure correct fitment. If you are unsure, we are happy to help you find the right disc.
