EGT Sensors

EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) sensors are used to measure exhaust gas temperature in the engine’s exhaust system and are an important tool in both tuning, motorsport, and more demanding engine setups. The EGT sensor is used to monitor how hot the exhaust gas becomes under load. This provides valuable information about the engine’s combustion and can help protect the engine and components against excessively high temperatures. High exhaust gas temperatures can be a sign of a lean mixture, too much ignition timing, high load, or other conditions that can damage the engine, turbo, manifold, or valves. For that reason, EGT measurement is relevant both as a safety measure and as an active tool when optimizing the engine setup.

Most motorsport and aftermarket systems use K-type thermocouples, which are the industry standard for EGT measurement. A K-type sensor generates approximately 41 µV/°C at moderate temperatures, providing fast response and a wide measurement range, typically up to around 1,200°C depending on the probe type. K-type is chosen because of its high temperature tolerance, durability, and broad compatibility.

When choosing an EGT sensor, it is important to look at thread type, sensor length, temperature range, response time, and compatibility with the gauge or ECU it will be used with. Some EGT sensors are supplied as complete kits with probe, connector, and wiring, while others are intended for more specialized installations. A correctly chosen EGT sensor makes it easier to monitor engine load and react in time if the temperature moves outside the desired range
