Electronic accelerator pedals

Electronic accelerator pedals are used in engine management systems with electronic throttle control, where the pedal signal is sent to the ECU instead of controlling the throttle body directly by cable. This makes them an important part of many modern drive-by-wire setups, where precise control of pedal input, throttle position, and engine response has a major impact on how the car performs in practice.

Electric accelerator pedals are especially relevant in projects with aftermarket ECU, motorsport electronics, and custom builds, where electronic throttle control and more flexible engine management are required. Both MaxxECU and ECUmaster document the use of electronic pedals in drive-by-wire solutions, and they highlight pedal position calibration and the use of two independent pedal signals as an important part of the setup.

The choice of the right electronic accelerator pedal depends, among other things, on pedal type, mounting, connector, sensor signal, and which engine management system it will work with. In some projects, it is about replacing or adding a pedal as part of a DBW setup, while in others it is about building a complete system with ECU, electronic throttle body, and correct pedal input.
