IS20 turbo – IHI RHF5 / 111973P026

The IS20 is a popular OE-type turbo for several 2.0 TSI / 2.0 TFSI EA888 Gen.3 engines and is also often used as a bolt-on solution replacing the IS12 on the correct MQB vehicles. It is known for fast spool, good response, and a strong mid-range, making it suitable both as a replacement turbo and as a performance upgrade.

The IS20 is not a “big” turbo in the traditional sense, but it hits a very strong sweet spot between spool and power. On original 2.0T IS20 cars, figures typically reach up to 290–337 hp at Stage 1 and up to 334–351 hp at Stage 2, depending on fuel and setup. This shows very clearly that a healthy IS20 on a 2.0T can deliver a strong and usable power range without the car losing its original response.

The IS20 is very popular because it offers a good balance between fast response and solid power. As an upgrade from the IS12, it is an obvious bolt-on solution on the correct MQB platforms, and with the right supporting parts it can deliver a noticeable improvement in both torque and top-end power.

To get proper results from an IS20, the best combination is typically a downpipe, intercooler, intake, and correct engine management calibration. On a mild to moderate setup, an IS20 will often be in the 280–320 hp range, depending on engine, fuel, hardware, and tuning. On original 2.0 TSI / TFSI cars with IS20, as mentioned, a higher level is often seen depending on the setup.

It is also a good idea to fit 1 step colder spark plugs, as this is often recommended for IS20 / IS38 setups to ensure stable ignition under higher load.
