Pistons

Pistons are a central part of the engine’s internal assembly and operate directly in the cylinders, where they convert combustion pressure into movement via the connecting rods and crankshaft. They are exposed to extreme temperatures and loads, and their design has a major impact on power, durability, and the engine’s overall character. That is why pistons are an important component in everything from ordinary engine rebuilding to advanced performance and motorsport projects.

The choice of pistons depends greatly on the engine build and the desired result. In standard engines, original pistons can often be sufficient, but for tuning, higher compression, turbocharged or supercharged builds, forged pistons will typically be a better solution. They are designed to handle higher loads and temperatures, making them suitable for engines that operate under more demanding conditions.

Pistons are available in different designs, where factors such as compression height, piston diameter, piston crown shape (for example flat, dome, or dish), ring land design, and weight all play an important role. At the same time, the choice of piston rings and tolerances is highly important for sealing, oil consumption, and reliability. This means that pistons must not only physically fit the engine, but also be correctly matched to the rest of the setup in order to achieve a durable and well-functioning result.

In performance and motorsport engines, pistons are often chosen as part of a complete upgrade together with connecting rods, bearings, and crankshaft. Changes in compression ratio, materials, and weight can affect engine character, response, and power delivery. That is why it is important to choose the right pistons for the specific project, whether the build is intended for street use, track use, or more extreme applications.
