Turbo blankets

Turbo blankets, also called turbo covers or turbo heat shields, are used to keep the heat contained around the turbo’s turbine housing. This helps reduce heat radiation in the engine bay and can be a relevant solution for road cars, track cars, drifting projects, time attack, drag racing and other performance builds where heat management is important.

A turbo generates a lot of heat, and the turbine housing in particular gives off large amounts of radiant heat to the surrounding parts in the engine bay. This can affect hoses, wiring, intake components, brake parts, air filters and the general engine bay temperature. A turbo blanket works as an insulating cover around the hot side of the turbo and helps limit how much heat escapes into the surroundings. In many setups, turbo blankets are used both to protect nearby components and to provide better control over engine bay temperatures. This is especially relevant in cars with tight engine bays, larger turbos, high loads or extended periods of hard driving.

A turbo blanket can help reduce radiant heat from the turbo and thereby lower the heat exposure of the parts located close to the turbine housing. This can result in a more controlled and protected engine bay, especially in performance and motorsport vehicles where space is often limited and temperatures are high.

By keeping the heat closer around the turbine housing, turbo blankets are also often used in builds where more effective heat management is desired around the exhaust side. Together with exhaust wrap, manifold wraps, heat shielding and other thermal protection, a turbo blanket can be an important part of an overall setup.

When choosing a turbo blanket, it is important to consider the size, shape and fit in relation to your turbine housing. Not all turbos have the same design, so it is important to choose a model that matches the hot side of the turbo as closely as possible. On some setups, universal solutions are chosen, while others require a more specific blanket depending on the turbo type and size.
