Wastegates & accessories
Wastegates are used to control and limit boost pressure on turbo engines by regulating how much exhaust gas is directed through the turbo. They are an important part of a turbo setup because they have a direct effect on how the turbo builds boost and how stable the boost pressure remains under load. A correctly chosen wastegate is important on optimised road cars, track cars and more custom-built engine setups where precise boost control and reliable operation are an important part of the build.
There are both internal and external wastegates, and the choice depends among other things on the turbo, manifold, power goals and how advanced the setup is. External wastegates are often used in more demanding builds where better flow, more stable control and greater flexibility in relation to spring pressure and setup are desired. Internal wastegates are typically seen on many standard and mildly upgraded turbo systems where space, simplicity and compact installation play a bigger role.
When choosing a wastegate and accessories, it is important to look at size, flange type, valve design, spring pressure and compatibility with the rest of the setup. Placement on the manifold, heat load, vacuum or pressure control and the interaction with the boost controller and turbo also have a major impact on the result. A well-functioning wastegate solution helps ensure stable boost pressure control, good response and a more reliable turbo build.
