Cooling fans

Cooling fans are used in the vehicle’s cooling system to help pull or push air through the radiator so the coolant can be cooled more efficiently. They are especially important at low speed, idle and in other situations where the natural airflow through the radiator is limited. A cooling fan is therefore a central part of a properly functioning cooling system, both in standard vehicles, optimised road cars, motorsport cars and custom-built projects.

When the vehicle is moving slowly or standing still, the airflow through the radiator drops significantly, and this is where the cooling fan plays an important role in keeping engine temperature under control. This is important because the engine still produces heat even when the vehicle is not receiving airflow through the front. If the cooling is not sufficient in these situations, the temperature can rise and put stress on the engine, gaskets, cylinder head, oil and other components in the engine bay. A properly functioning cooling fan therefore helps improve both reliability and temperature stability.
