Expansion tanks
Expansion tanks are an important part of a car’s cooling system and are used to handle the expansion of the coolant as the temperature rises. When the engine gets hot, both pressure and volume increase in the cooling system, and the expansion tank helps ensure that the system can operate stably without unnecessary loss of coolant or problems with pressure control.
An expansion tank works as a reservoir for excess coolant and at the same time makes it easier to check the fluid level in the system. In many cars, it is a fixed part of the original cooling system, but in performance cars, motorsport cars and custom-built projects, a different solution than standard is often chosen. This can be relevant for engine swaps, engine bay modifications or cooling system upgrades where better durability, more space or a simpler and more service-friendly setup is required.
A correctly sized expansion system is important to avoid air in the cooling system, unstable pressure and loss of coolant under load. This is especially relevant in cars with high heat output or hard driving, where temperatures change quickly. A good expansion tank can therefore be an important part of a stable and well-functioning cooling system, whether on a road car, track day car or motorsport project.
